Red Building, the historical learning center of Chantaburi, is the bitter story of Thai people in Chanthaburi when it was dominated by France for 11 years (1893-19903). The ancestors sacrificed their lives, territory, and properties before in order to save Chanthaburi and Thailand. Red Building and Chicken Dung Cell were built by French army in 1893 during Franco-Siamese War. At that time, France expanded the power to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It also tried to invade Thailand by claiming that the territory on the left side of Khon River was Laos Kingdom. France attacked Bangkok to cease this land and some area in Trat Province, and claim for damage for three million FRF (about 1.56 million THB at that time) In the meantime, Thailand did not deliver the land or pay the damages to France. Thus, France ceased Chantaburi and built the red building: a small one-story building 7 x 32 m2 with five chambers as the command center and the residence for French-Yuan soldiers. The outside was paint with red color. Red Building is located at Phikat Panjamitr Fortress which was the old turret in King Rama III reign. France demolished the fortress and replaced with the Red Building. France used the Red Building as the command center until 1904 when France got the land of Thailand’s colony and the damages. There was the record that the money in the treasury ran out completely. In 2014, Red Building was reconstructed as the library and the non-formal education center of Laem Sing District. Later, it was cancelled and became the tourist attraction.
